Jailbreakme is the software I've used recently, which was so easy I wasn't sure it could possibly work. Basically, like Shingo says, the software changes based on firmware/model and newer and better things keep coming out.

The route taken to hack any version of iPhone/iPad is the same, what is most important is that the software being used. A newer version of Redsn0w or other breaking software will be released for a different firmware, but to jailbreak firmware version 4, it may take a while for the new jailbreak.

Thanks a lot for providing the info. I'm curious to know if this method will be similar for v4? Sort of anxious to get my hands on it. Also, Redsn0w is great and I think a lot of people unfortunately have problems with it because they don't know where to start with it

It looks like there are quite a few similar cases online. To turn it back on, just connect to a power source and hold the on and start button till it turns back on.
