Good Housekeeping & Your Computer

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, one of the best things you can do is to make regular backups of your important data, why…? Because once you know your data is safe & there is no threat of you losing what may have taken months if not years to amass, then we are halfway to diluting the fear aspect associated with computer viruses.

One of the quickest, easiest & cheapest methods of backing up your data is to have a 2nd smaller hard drive fitted in your computer system. eg you can usually pick up a 80 gigabyte hard drive for $25 or less & just to put into perspective what could be stored on such a drive, a copied DVD film is quite often in the region of 4 gig in size, therefore an 80 gig drive could store / accomodate approximatey 20 full length films ! Or if music (MP3’s) is your thing then an average album is approx 50mb in size, so your looking at 20 albums to 1 gig or somewhere in the region of 1600 albums to an 80 gig hard drive.

Safeguard Your Memories

Photos are yet another thing we hate to lose & rightly so, they are hard copies of memories & as such are often irreplaceable & hold great emotional value to those of us that create vast collections from our past. Such things as wedding photos, a first born child, birthday celebrations, a memorable holiday, pets etc. It soon becomes very apparant why there is such a strong dread & fear of computer viruses, doesn’t it…?

Good Houskeeping & Your Computer

Your computer is really nothing more than an electronic file system, so why don’t you use it as such ! I have seen so many computers with photos, mp3’s, software & documents etc scattered throughout the hard drive in what I can only describe as utter chaos. This method of storage is nothing more than lazyness, is this how you store stuff in your house..? just walk through the door and throw stuff around willy nilly..? Of course not, so why do it with your computer.

In order to make backing up important files & data as quick and easy a process as possible, we need to have some order & structure to our electronic filing system & this is where My Documents is a godsend. Get into the habit of using My Documents for storing everything you do and your life will become so much easier, backing up your data will be a breeze & we will have finally pulled the fangs of the dreaded virus monster.

My Documents – Your Way

Just browse to your My Documents folder & take a look, there are folders for My Music, My Photos, My Video etc. Things are laid out exactly as you would in your house, you store things in the appropraite cupboards & drawers, so you know exactly where they are ! You do the same with your My Documents folder & if there isn’t a folder there for what you want, then simply create one by opening “My Docs“, right click on any blank area, then select New, then select Folder. To rename it simply right click on the folder in question & select rename, type in the new name & press enter.
