Best gaming choices for 2009
In this article, we will list some of the power laptops of year 2009 since it is still only Jan of 2010. There is actually one simple way to judge between laptops or a desktop, which is benchmarking score
Benchmarking is a score result that a program will reveal after running a series of tests on the machine. A higher score indicates a more powerful laptop, obviously. Therefore there is no need to mess your hair trying to decipher between the techie hardware terms that are listed on the spec sheet.
Good gaming rigs now should not have scores below 7500. You do not have to bring this software down to the computer shop to test every single machine. You will get your ass whooped for trying to create trouble.
One test can take around 20 mins and it is going to take a very long time for all the laptops to be done with the test. Simply google search for the make and model ending with the words benchmark score. Here are some options for a good gaming rig.
1. Dell Alienware M15x
Alienware has made a name in the computing world for hardcore beast machine. If you see this name, it means brute specs and no holding back. This rule applies to its price tag as well. This machine is huge and thus weighs 4 kg, The laptop is made huge so that there is a lot of room inside to dissipate heat.
It has a full HD screen with a size of 15.6 inch, it has a special feature that enables the laptop to supply power even when it goes to sleep so that you can charge mobile phones via usb ports without turning the laptop on.
With a 1 GB Nvdia GTX 260M combined with i7-820QM (1.73Ghz ) core, this demon scores a high score of 11,666 points in the bench mark test.
2. Acer Aspire 5942G
This laptop focus on beauty and design, it has a glossy black lid and it is easy to put fingerprint smudges on it. The keyboard is beautifully made to look like the keys are raised above the laptop. With no number keypads on this laptop, the keys are made bigger for more typing space.
Comes with a i7 720QM (1.6 Ghz ) core. Uses a ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650. It has a resolution of 1,336 x 768 which is just the bare minimum for a good gaming rig. It includes more ram with 6 gig to compensate for a non blu-ray drive. This laptop scores a bench mark score of 7,608
3. Asus G51
This laptop has a palm rest that is designed to make the user feel comfortable even after long hours of usage. The LCD panel of this laptop is able to open to a full 180 degrees to prevent anyone from breaking the hinge.
Comes with choices of a Core 2 duo or Core 2 quad processors ranging from 2 Ghz to 2.8 Ghz. It has 4 Gigs worth of rams, not a lot but enough.
It packs in this unit a GTX260M which is a good high end video card, but also uses the minimum resolution 1,336 x 768 which makes the card a waste of its power in this laptop unless you have a HD monitor to hook up to.
With such a powerful video card packed in, its no wonder it has a bench mark score of 11,541
4. Gateway P7904g
A huge 17 inch screen differentiates itself amongst most laptops. With such a huge screen, it is able to pack in a bigger keyboard that includes a numerical keypad. The hinge is also able to extend 180 degrees just like the Asus.
Gateway also decides to use Duo cores for its processor but with a slightly higher processor. The Centrinos. These processors are the turbo chips in the laptop world and would make a difference in performance. The video card is good as well. A GTX 260M. But it is limited to 2.0 Ghz processor thus yield a bench mark score just a bit lower at 10,442
5. MSI GT 640
The display is a minimum of 15.6 inches but it packs a fast i7 quad (2.8 Ghz ) core. Woo Wee.. Whistle~ . This is supposed to be one fast baby. 4 Gigs ram, Blu-Ray drive. It has got everything that Santa is supposed to pack in except for the graphic card.
It comes with a slower GTS250M , compared to what others would use a GTX, this has made a severe dent on the bench mark score. It only scores a 7,847. This is what I call a waste of resources. Just like telling you to get dresses up in a suit and end up eating in McDonalds.
6. Toshiba Qosmio X500
Another laptop that uses a good processor but a slower graphic card, comes with a i7-720QM processor with a GTS 250M. It does make up for its disadvantage by giving a full HD screen 1,920 x 1,080 with a huge 18.5 inch screen. This laptop even comes with a Blu-Ray burner. Which means Superb video viewing experience.
It comes with usb charging sleep function that allows usb devices to be charged even when the laptop is in sleep mode. It comes with the best sound speakers from Harmon Kardon. This laptop has excellent sound effects worth bragging. Bench mark scores is sadly 8,871.
These best gaming power laptops are released in the fourth quarter of 2009. It should be more affordable in 2010 as time goes by. Of course newer better gaming power laptops will over run these in future, but these options will last you quite a few years to enjoy most of the hardware demanding game releases.
